Report: Tom Brady won't play in preseason opener; Ryan Mallett to start in potential showcase
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady won't suit up in the team's preseason opener Thursday versus the Washington Redskins, the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe reports.
It's not a surprise, as the Patriots don't need to see what Brady can do on the field. After a strong week of practice, it makes no sense to subject the veteran to the risk of a big hit from a defender.
In Brady's place, fourth-year pro Ryan Mallett will start. Rookie Jimmy Garoppolo should also get extended playing time.
If Mallett looks good, expect his positive play to reignite trade rumors. Mallett was reportedly on the block prior to the draft (with the Houston Texans rumored to be in hot pursuit), but no deal materialized.
Mallett is entering the final season of his rookie deal.
