2014 NFL futures betting: Super Bowl odds revisited

Rick Osentoski / Reuters

The start of the 2014 NFL season is less than a week away, leaving bettors little time to get in on some long-term futures action for the upcoming season.

Preseason performances, injuries, and changing public perceptions have forced oddsmakers to adjust their lines, making them worthy of another look for bettors in search of value.

Here are some odds worth revisiting when betting on Super Bowl XLIX futures.

New Orleans Saints +1600, BetOnline

The Saints will pay out an additional three units on BetOnline compared with what they offered at the start of the month, and there's little reason to explain that move.

Why the public wouldn't want to get behind an explosive offense with an improving defense is curious, but a 16-to-1 payout has to be enticing to those who believe in Drew Brees and company.

Carolina Panthers +5000, Bovada

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is expected to be ready for the regular season opener, but news of a hairline fracture to his ribs is enough to get Panthers backers an extra 10 units at Bovada.

The strength of this Panthers team was always its defense, and nothing has changed there. Even with a limited Newton, the Panther offense is still in better shape than it was a year ago with an improved receiving corps and a healthy Jonathan Stewart.

St. Louis Rams +8000, BetOnline

Backing the Rams in a tough NFC West is tantamount to flushing money down the toilet, but for those looking to roll the dice, the team is paying out an additional 30 units on BetOnline after what was, at worst, a lateral move at quarterback.

The plan was always to lean on the running game, and the team's defense is one of the stingier units in the league. Jeff Fisher will figure out a way to keep the team competitive.
