Michael Vick miffed by former Eagles teammate Riley Cooper
With the Philadelphia Eagles on the verge of complete revolt, Michael Vick prevented the walls from closing in on Riley Cooper last season after the receiver's overtly racist comments began circling the internet.
Or so says Vick.
"I changed the whole dynamic of that situation, and that was a proud moment for me," he told ESPN's Ian O'Connor. "... I was able to save a young man's career, and that young man went on to have the greatest year of his career and get a contract that he probably never imagined he would get."
That five-year, $25-million contract, however, signifies the beginning of a quarrel between the two, as explained by Vick.
"A couple of things transpired since [the incident] that I dislike, and I'll be honest with you. After he signed his contract, I sent him a text and I never got a text back, and that made me feel a certain type of way. But I'm not the type of guy who holds grudges."
In the ESPN article, Vick detailed how he stood in front of his then-Eagles teammates and attempted to defuse a situation that could have fractured the locker room.
The now-New York Jets pivot hopes that Cooper eventually recognizes the role he had in salvaging his career.
"I just hope he's [appreciative] of my boldness to step out in front of the world and say what I said, and he appreciates what I did and understands the magnitude of it, because nobody else was going to step up and say anything."
The pair will meet on the field Thursday night when the Jets close their preseason campaign in Philadelphia.
Update: Vick's text has apparently been answered... 6 months later.
In reference to Michael Vick's comments about Riley Cooper in ESPN, a Vick spokesman said Vick and Cooper spoke today and "are all good."
