This Day in Football History
1994 - Don Shula's Dolphins beat David Shula's Bengals
Legendary Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula coaches against the Cincinnati Bengals, coached by his son, David. It's the first-ever meeting between father and son head coaches in NFL history.
Don, the future steak house impresario, would end his career with 328 head coaching wins, while his son would finish with 19, leaving coaching in 1996 to - predictably - enter the lucrative world of steakhouse management.
1950 - Bob Shaw sets NFL record with five touchdown receptions
Before the Cardinals took up residence in Arizona, they play in Chicago as the only NFL team to score exactly four points in a game. On this day, however, they scored 55 and wide receiver Bob Shaw caught five touchdown passes.
Shaw's record goes on to be tied by two Hall of Famers: Kellen Winslow in 1981 and Jerry Rice in 1990, but the mark has never been broken.
1983 - Packers score 49 first half points, including 35 in second quarter, against the Buccaneers
Before Brett Favre, the Green Bay Packers have Lynn Dickey and his Favresque 1983 season, when Dickey leads the league in passing yards, touchdowns and interceptions. In a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dickey does all of his damage in the first half as the Packers score 49 of their 55 points in the first two quarters.
In the second quarter alone they scored 35 points, with Dickey throwing two touchdowns, the defense scoring two and running back Harlan Huckleby rushing for one.
