Newton, Bell among NFL's Player of the Week award winners
A day after suffering two fractures in his lower back as the result of a car accident, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
Newton absolutely torched the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, completing 21-of-33 passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 83 yards and another score on 12 carries.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell took home AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after he ran roughshod over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Bell racked up 235 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns as the Steelers trounced the Bengals 42-21.
Baltimore Ravens linebacker Elvis Dumervil was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week after he lived within the nightmares of Ryan Tannehill and the Miami Dolphins, amassing four tackles, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble during a 28-13 victory.
New York Giants rookie linebacker Devon Kennard claimed the NFC Defensive Player of the Week award, notching two sacks, six tackles and a forced fumble as the Giants crushed the Titans 36-7.
New England Patriots punter Ryan Allen and St. Louis Rams wide receiver/punt returner Tavon Austin captured the AFC and NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors, respectively.
Allen had five kicks for 247 yards, while Austin had 143 total punt-return yards and a touchdown during the Rams 24-0 victory over the Washington Redskins.
