10 interesting stats from the NFL regular season
Jim Brown / USA TODAY Sports
We may be down to four teams in the quest for the Super Bowl, but we shouldn't forget that the NFL's regular season produced plenty of interesting statistical nuggets. Here are 10 for your reading pleasure:
- 31: The number of teams that registered more than 3,000 passing yards, establishing an NFL record. Only the New York Jets failed to surpass the 3,000-yard plateau, while 12 exceeded 4,000 yards - led by the Indianapolis Colts with 4,894.
- 71: The number of times Jacksonville Jaguars quarterbacks were sacked, the highest single-season total since the 2006 Oakland Raiders allowed 72 sacks. Rookie QB Blake Bortles was on the receiving end of a league-high 55 sacks, but it could have been worse - just ask David Carr.
- 69.3: The number of rushing yards per game allowed by the Detroit Lions, making them the first team since the 2010 Pittsburgh Steelers to limit teams to fewer than 70 rushing yards per contest. The Lions held foes to 3.2 yards per carry and didn't allow a run longer than 35 yards.
- 1,199: The number of receiving yards racked up by New York Giants rookie sensation Odell Beckham, Jr., over the final nine games of the season. That incredible run included seven 100-yard performances, four games with double-digit catches and nine touchdowns.
- 4: The number of times the Arizona Cardinals attempted a fourth-down play in 2014, the league's lowest total since the 2006 Colts went for it just four times. The Cardinals may have been risk-averse, but they were effective in limited action, converting three of their tries.
- 40: Indianapolis QB Andrew Luck's league-best passing touchdown total, the lowest to lead the NFL since New England's Tom Brady had 36 in 2010. The competition was fierce this season, as a league-record nine quarterbacks finished with at least 30 TD tosses.
- 854: The number of receiving yards racked up by Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell, ranking him 40th among all players. That's the highest finish by a rusher since Philadelphia Eagles star Brian Westbrook finished 39th with 771 receiving yards back in 2007.
- 2: The number of players who finished with six or more interceptions - the fewest since 1982. Only Detroit safety Glover Quin (seven) and Cleveland Browns defensive back Tashaun Gipson (six) had more than five INTs; to put that in perspective, 16 players had six or more picks in 2000.
- 8: The number of missed extra points out of 1,230 attempts in 2014 - a 99.3-percent success rate. The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears were the only teams to miss more than one, while 26 teams were perfect. Maybe it's time to move those kicks back, fellas.
- 22.5: The average number of points scored per team per game, down slightly from last season's league-record mark. It's the first time in five years the total hasn't risen; teams averaged 21.5 points in 2009, 22.0 in 2010, 22.2 in 2011, 22.8 in 2012 and 23.2 in 2013.
