Mike Maccagnan knows the New York Jets have a lot of work ahead of them to close the talent gap with teams like the New England Patriots.

The Jets new general manager is looking to free agency as a means of upgrading a deflated roster this offseason after his predecessor, John Idzik, touted the draft as the best means to improve a team.

"Building through the draft is ideally what I'd like to do, but we'll be very active in free agency," Maccagnan told the team's website Tuesday.

The Jets are projected to have $40 million in cap space in 2015 and will have to spend a majority of that money to meet the NFL's four year 89-percent spending compliance.

It's not a stretch to imagine the Jets allocating a large chunk of that money to luring a player like Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who has reportedly  expressed interest in playing for a New York team.
