NFL changes language to catch rule

Andrew Weber / USA TODAY Sports

It's becoming harder and harder to tell what is or isn't a catch in the NFL these days.

The league took a step to try to clear things up on Monday, changing the wording of the rule that clarifies what constitutes a reception.

As opposed to having to make "a football move" to complete a catch, a receiver must now "clearly establish himself as a runner" instead.

"For years the requirement for a catch is control, both feet and after that the receiver had to have the ball long enough to perform a (football) act," VP of Officiating Dean Blandino told Will Brinson of CBS Sports. "It was that act common to the game, football move, that created some confusion."

This change doesn't exactly make things clear cut. Figuring out when a receiver establishes themselves as a runner still leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

The league also maintained the highly-debated Dez Bryant incomplete pass call from the playoffs still wouldn't be a catch under the new language.
