Ex-NFLer Buchanon in new book: My mom asked for $1M in exchange for raising me
Former Washington Redskins cornerback Phillip Buchanon has a book coming out in which he details the social pressures associated with becoming a wealthy football player.
Buchanon reveals in "New Money: Staying Rich" that after he was drafted in the first round of the 2002 draft, his mother asked for $1 million in exchange for raising him. Buchanon did not oblige, but did buy his mom a new house, which led to resentment as he continued to pay her mortgage on two properties.
"When I got to the NFL, it was all dollars and no sense," Buchanon told FOX Sports One. "I want to make sure the next generation of athletes doesn't make the same mistakes."
Buchanon believes his goal of enlightening the next generation on money matters should extend to other industries as well, helping to educate anyone who should become a millionaire.
"I encourage everyone to do stuff like this," he said. "More people who've had success in all fields should be writing these kinds of books."
