Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said Ihenacho (foot) could compete with Jeron Johnson for the starting job at strong safety, Mike Jones of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis:
Ihenacho, a 2012 UDFA, is under contract for just $660,000, while Johnson signed a two-year, $3.5 million deal in the offseason. Johnson is the heavy favorite to start, but it at least seems Ihenacho has recovered from the fractured heel that limited him to just three games last season. While Ihenacho recorded 73 tackles, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries for the Broncos in 2013, he was also a liability in coverage.
