Chargers, Eric Weddle won't discuss new contract until end of 2015 season
Eric Weddle's imminent divorce from the San Diego Chargers appears to be rapidly accelerating.
The Chargers won't discuss a contract extension with their disgruntled All-Pro safety until the end of the 2015 season, according to Weddle's agent, David Canter via the San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee.
Weddle is the anchor of the Chargers' defense and was irate about the lack of progress on a contract extension. As a result, he's been holding out of OTAs in protest.
"He'll be excited about playing this year and then hit free agency," Canter said Monday.
Chargers general manager Tom Telesco, who's treated Weddle's demands with indifference throughout the process, declined further comment.
"I'm not coming anytime soon until something on their side is gonna be said," Weddle said May 5. "They know where we're at, and they obviously know their stance, so we'll see what happens from there."
"We're disappointed and will continue to be disappointed," Canter said. "But Eric will go all out this season."
The three-time Pro Bowler led the league in interceptions in 2011. San Diego is talented enough to contend for a playoff spot, but a disgruntled Weddle doesn't bode well for a secondary that's wildly inconsistent.
If the holdout continues into the season, Darrell Stuckey is expected to join the starting lineup.
With this new development, the 2015 season will almost certainly be Weddle's last with the Chargers, and he'll be of the most highly sought-after free agents in 2016.
