Titans' Steve Underwood to remain team president through 2015 season

Brett Davis / US PRESSWIRE

The Tennessee Titans don't seem to be in a hurry to find a long-term figurehead for the franchise.

The team announced Tuesday that interim president Steve Underwood will remain in that role through the conclusion of the 2015 season.

Underwood ran the Titans' day-to-day operations from 2006-11 before retiring. He was lured back to the organization and put in charge when CEO Tommy Smith abruptly stepped down earlier this year.

Underwood was supposed to find a new CEO, but that endeavor seems to be on hold.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, at least 20 candidates emerged in the search for a new CEO, but they have all been informed that the search is suspended.

As Florio notes, it's difficult not to view the Titans' actions as a sign the team could be on the market. A new owner would presumably want to install a new CEO and Underwood's continued presence in the role could be the Titans' way of treading water until a sale is negotiated.

The Titans have maintained the team is not for sale.
