Chargers' Eric Weddle on upcoming season: 'I just want to go out on a high note'

San Diego Chargers safety Eric Weddle is doing his best to block out distractions after making it clear that the upcoming season would be his last with the organization.

Weddle threatened to leave the club if the two parties couldn't agree to a multiyear extension before training camp, and the Chargers refused to balk on their original stance.

The All-Pro safety said in June it was "obvious" that he wasn't part of the Chargers' long-term strategy and would head to free agency in 2016. Weddle's agent, David Canter, also confirmed his client's intention of leaving the club.

Entering a pivotal campaign, Weddle attempted to focus on the upcoming year in San Diego.

"I just want to go out on a high note, go out on top and lead my team," Weddle said to ESPN's Eric D.Williams. "I want to continue to show what I'm all about. I'm a pro. I'm a professional and strive to be the best and try to have fun.

"It's all in the past. I can't control it. They will do what they want. That's their plan, I have mine and I'll make the most of it."

Weddle is slated to earn $7.5 million in the final term of a five-year contract. Upon becoming a free agent, Weddle will likely be one of the most sought-after players on the market.

"There's so much uncertainty within certain players and the organization," Weddle said. "A lot of us may not be here if they do move. Hopefully, they don't and they figure it out. But I'm not really focusing on that. I'm just trying to get the most out of every day and enjoy it as much as you can, and all of that stuff will take care of itself once the season is over, and move on from there."

Resigned to his fate, Weddle will do his all to lead an up-and-coming defense. It may be of little consolation to Chargers' fans who watched him evolve from a second-round pick to one of the league's preeminent safeties.
