The Miami Dolphins and free-agent guard Evan Mathis are mutually interested in reaching a deal, according to Mathis' agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

Mathis was released by the Philadelphia Eagles in June after holding out for a new contract.

The 33-year-old is widely considered to be one of the league's best run-blocking guards, and Rosenhaus expanded on the ongoing negotiations to find his client a new club.

"Suffice to say we're talking to the Dolphins about Evan and that's where we're at. We're talking," Rosenhaus said on his weekly television segment on WSVN, according to Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post.

"There's mutual interest but we still have a long way to go. There are a lot of other interested teams."

The two-time Pro Bowler would be a massive upgrade over the Dolphins' anemic starting guard combination, and would almost certainly be projected as a Week 1 starter if he were to sign.

Mathis also received interest from the New York Jets.
