Chargers, Philip Rivers agree to 4-year contract extension; reportedly worth $84M
The San Diego Chargers and quarterback Philip Rivers have agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension through 2019, the club announced Saturday.
Rivers' new deal is worth $84 million with $65 million guaranteed, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The NC State product was slated to earn $15.75 million in base salary for 2015, the final year of his existing contract.
The 12th-year pro completed 66.5 percent of his passes in 2014, throwing 31 touchdowns against 18 interceptions. Rivers has spent the entirety of his career with the Chargers after being acquired in a draft-day trade with the New York Giants in 2004.
A five-time Pro Bowler, Rivers was honored as the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2013.
The 33-year-old has guided the Chargers to four postseason wins since becoming the team's starter in 2006, the most by any quarterback in franchise history during the Super Bowl era.
Rivers previously said he'd be fine with playing the 2015 season without a new contract. The 6-foot-5 signal-caller has the most wins by a quarterback in Chargers history.
