Report: Lions release Taylor Mays

Andrew Weber / Reuters

The Detroit Lions have released safety Taylor Mays, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

Mays was signed by the Lions in June after being released by the Minnesota Vikings after just three months with the team.

The former USC standout reportedly asked for his release from the team on Friday morning and the team will oblige officially within the next 24 hours.

A former second-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers, Mays has tallied 98 tackles over five seasons.

The New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, and Philadelphia Eagles are all potential landing spots for Mays after each being hit with injuries in the preseason.
