Brian Hoyer was named the Houston Texans' starting quarterback prior to the season, but after being pulled in Week 1, he may no longer hold the job.

Hoyer was pulled after going 18-of-34 for 236 yards for a touchdown and an interception, in exchange for Ryan Mallett. Kansas City defeated Houston 27-20.

Mallett attempted a valiant comeback, cutting the Chiefs' lead down from 27-9 to 27-20, but it was all for naught as the Texans couldn't record a victory at home. The backup went 8-of-13 for 98 yards and a touchdown.

After the game, Hoyer expressed remorse for his middling performance.

"Obviously I feel terrible. I feel like I let this whole organization down," Hoyer said. "Started bad, poor execution. Couldn't have started game any worse. Offensively, we have to do so much better to win in this league."

Hoyer didn't appear to be upset Mallett entered the game.

"I'm all about the team. For him to move the ball and score a touchdown, that was great. I'll be ready either way," Hoyer said of Mallett.

Mallett also seemed unfazed that he made an appearance during the team's opener.

"I take pride in my job, I take pride in being a Houston Texan and I'm going to give it everything I've got.

"All I care about is winning football games. I don't care about any individual stuff. There is a lot of fight in this team."

While Hoyer won't be placed on a short leash, Mallett's inspiring performance may give Texans head coach Bill O'Brien something to think about.
