Report: Cowboys to work out Christian Ponder, Josh Johnson, Matt Flynn

Joe Nicholson / USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys will work out free-agent quarterbacks Christian Ponder and Josh Johnson, according to Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Quarterback Matt Flynn will also work out for the Cowboys, according to ESPN's Josina Anderson.

With starter Tony Romo reportedly out for eight weeks, the Cowboys are left with Brandon Weeden as the only quarterback on the active roster.

Jason Campbell was also contacted, but reportedly opted to stay retired.

Ponder, a former first-round pick, was once a potential franchise quarterback, but failed to live up to his draft status with the Minnesota Vikings.

Johnson is a veteran of five NFL teams since he was drafted in 2008 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Both have experience as starters and as backups, and are presumably the best options for the Cowboys with little available on the free-agent market.
