New York Giants tight end Daniel Fells had his season ended prematurely due to a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection, and is now fighting to save his foot from amputation, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Fells has been hospitalized for more than a week as he battles the infection, which he developed after suffering a toe injury, and then an ankle injury. He was placed in the intensive care unit Friday, and has since been moved to a private room with a nurse devoted solely to his care, Rapoport reports.

Fells has undergone five surgeries, and as of Saturday night, doctors were fighting to save his foot, according to Rapoport.

However, Rapoport adds that the more urgent fear is that the infection has spread into the bone and could travel into Fells' blood.

The Giants announced after placing Fells on IR that they were working with the Duke Infection Control Outreach Network and local infectious disease specialists, who have defined protocols to follow.

The team's locker room, training rooms, and meeting rooms were all scrubbed and sanitized, and players were briefed on how to prevent the spread of MRSA.
