The San Francisco 49ers have fired head coach Jim Tomsula.

Tomsula, who served as the team's defensive line coach from 2007-2014, spent just one season as head coach and leaves with a 5-11 record.

"Jimmy has been a valuable member of the 49ers organization for the last nine years," 49ers CEO Jed York said in a statement. "We all know he is a man of high character, and his contributions on the field and in our community have always been greatly appreciated. This entire organization is proud and grateful to have worked so closely alongside Jimmy. We all wish him and his family great success in the future."

At .313, he exits with the worst winning percentage for a head coach since Dennis Erickson in 2003-04.

The season seemed doomed from the start, as key players Patrick Willis, Anthony Davis, Chris Borland, and Justin Smith all abruptly retired prior to a game being played.

In addition to those retirements, the departures of Frank Gore, Mike Iupati, Michael Crabtree, Perrish Cox, Chris Culliver, and Dan Skuta to other teams completed the dismantling of a roster that went to three straight conference championship games.

The 49ers will be a desirable location for many prominent head-coaching candidates, with Chip Kelly, Sean Payton, and Hue Jackson already being linked to the job.

General Manager Trent Baalke remains entrenched as the 49ers main decision-maker when it comes to football operations.
