NFL supports referee's decision to redo coin flip in Cardinals-Packers
The NFL says referee Clete Blakeman's decision to redo the coin flip at the start of overtime in Saturday's game between the Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers was justified.
Blakeman's first attempt at a flip somehow didn't flip at all. While the NFL says there's no rule requiring a do-over in such an instance, it believes Blakeman's decision to flip the coin again was fair.
"There is nothing in the rule book that specifies (a required flip)," NFL spokesman Michael Signora said in a statement, according to ESPN. "But the referee used his judgment to determine that basic fairness dictated that the coin should flip for the toss to be valid. That is why he re-tossed the coin."
The Cardinals won the toss and scored a touchdown on the opening drive of overtime to win the game.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers complained after the game that he should have been allowed a second chance to choose heads or tails after the initial toss.
