Packers' McCarthy says Eddie Lacy will need to lose weight for 2016 season
Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy heavily scrutinized running back Eddie Lacy for not being in shape for the duration of the 2015 season.
Lacy was temporarily benched in favor of James Starks, and the Packers' running game unexpectedly struggled at times despite boasting one of the NFL's premier offensive lines.
After two consecutive 1,000-yard plus seasons, Lacy regressed with 758 rushing yards and three touchdowns on a 4.1 yards per carry average.
"He's got a lot of work to do," McCarthy said. "His offseason last year was not good enough and he never recovered from it. He cannot play at the weight he played at this year."
McCarthy said during his season-ending press conference Monday that he'll continue to be in charge of calling plays.
The Packers' head coach delegated associate head coach Tom Clements in charge of calling the offensive plays for the majority of the year, but reclaimed the responsibility in December.
"I will be calling plays from here on in," McCarthy said, noting that he expects Clements to return to the Packers for next season.
Green Bay was eliminated from the playoffs during a dramatic 26-20 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday.
