A thorough examination revealed that former New York Giants safety Tyler Sash suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease that is caused by repeated trauma.

Sash died on Sept. 8, 2015 due to an accidental overdose of pain medication.

CTE can only be diagnosed after a person dies. Ann McKee, a professor at Boston University School of Medicine, conducted the examination of Sash's brain and determined the CTE levels were comparable to those of deceased Hall of Fame linebacker Junior Seau's, the New York Times confirmed.

"My son knew something was wrong but he couldn’t express it," Barnetta Sash said, according to Bill Pennington of the New York Times. "He was such a good person, and it’s sad that he struggled so with this - not knowing where to go with it.

"Now it makes sense. The part of the brain that controls impulses, decision-making and reasoning was damaged badly."

Sash played two seasons with the Giants and was a member of the Super Bowl XLVI-winning club.
