3 key matchups in Super Bowl 50

The Carolina Panthers' highest-scoring offense is slated to face off against the Denver Broncos' top-rated defense in Super Bowl 50.

In a game that boasts some of the preeminent stars in the league, here is a look at three key matchups in Super Bowl 50:

Demaryius Thomas vs. Josh Norman

Demaryius Thomas is the Broncos' most versatile offensive weapon, possessing the size to box out smaller cornerbacks, and the speed to punish lazy tackling in the open field. Lining up at left wide receiver, Thomas will likely square off against Panthers All-Pro cornerback Josh Norman, who usually occupies the right side of the field.

Thomas will need to use his 3-inch height advantage against Norman, especially on out routes near the sideline. Usually, Thomas' acceleration is enough to fend off his opponent, but Norman arguably possesses the best recovery speed in the NFL, and will likely to try to bait Peyton Manning into errant deep throws. Although Norman isn't averse to contact, Thomas will need to bully him into submission to win the duel.

The Panthers usually play in-zone coverage and it's unlikely Norman will leave the right side of the field, so the Broncos could deploy a lesser player against him. If the Broncos are to win this clash, they'll need to physically harangue the Panthers' star.

Kawann Short vs. Evan Mathis

Panthers defensive tackle Kawann Short is one of the NFL's most disruptive run stoppers, and may be even better against the pass with 11 sacks. Short is a penetrative force that few offensive lines can handle, and the Broncos will need to account for the second-team All-Pro at all times. Going against Broncos guard Evan Mathis, Short may be meeting his true equal.

Mathis was considered one of the NFL's best run blockers but was benched for the final three games of the regular season. However, the 34-year-old is coming off his best game of the year, and will need to be in top form against Short. Short is prone to make at least three game-changing plays per game, and Mathis will need to coordinate with center Matt Paradis on how to block the Panthers' star.

Greg Olsen vs. T.J. Ward

Greg Olsen is the Panthers' top target, recording 77 receptions for 1,104 yards and seven touchdowns. Olsen is excellent in the open field and shines as Cam Newton's premier option in the red zone. The Panthers' Pro Bowl tight end is too physical for the Broncos' cornerbacks, and will likely be shadowed by safety T.J. Ward.

Ward is a tremendous open-field hitter and usually excels against physical opponents. If Olsen lines up outside as a de facto wide receiver, Ward will follow suit and operate suitably in coverage. The only concern for the Broncos is that Ward is recovering from an ankle injury, and his speed advantage against Olsen may be diminished as a result.
