Newton's father: 'Being concerned with (Cam) celebrating is trivial'
Cecil Newton, father of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, says the backlash to his son's on-field celebrations pales in comparison to the major hardships his son has endured and others endure every day.
The elder Newton was a guest on KISS 104.1's Tom Joyner Morning Show on Friday and dished on topics including his son's sense of style, his car accident, what he means to the black community, and where he learned his values.
A transcript of the interview is available on MyAJC.com.
On the topic of Cam's famous celebrations, Cecil had this to say:
Are you kidding me. We dab. I go to the type of church, if the spirit is moving, let go and let God (takeover). I'm going to say something about the public's opinion of Cam and his dancing and his celebrations. I just had to take time and reflect a couple of days ago. I can recall and it's on Cam's Instagram page somewhere, I'm not all that social media active, but … Cam's life came inches away from being extracted from him. So, when you base that on what possibly could have happened, but by the grace of God and people praying he walked away from that accident and ultimately could have ended it all. So, basically being concerned with him celebrating is trivial compared to what some people have to suffer, cancer, you know, paralysis and stuff like that.
The accident in question is Cam's December 2014 car crash, which saw him overturn his car and leave on a stretcher.
This is probably the Instagram post Cecil refers to:
Newton escaped serious injury in the crash and has been as close to an unstoppable force as exists in the NFL ever since.
