Report: Peyton Manning expected to decide on retirement by next week

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is expected to make a decision on his retirement by next week, according to Woody Paige of The Denver Post.

Manning hasn't ruled out a return for the 2016 season, but is widely expected to retire this spring after capturing Super Bowl 50 earlier in February.

Broncos vice president of public relations Patrick Smyth confirmed that Manning hasn't made a decision on his future and will continue to speak with the organization throughout the week.

Broncos general manager John Elway spoke to Manning on Tuesday, and said his quarterback did not make a firm decision on retirement at the time.

"I met with Peyton a couple nights ago and we had a good talk, and as I said after the game (Super Bowl 50), we're going to give him as much time as he needs, and he still needs some more time," Elway said Thursday to ESPN's Jeff Legwold.

Manning is in the final year of his contract, and will be owed $19 million in base salary if he chooses to return next season. The salary kicks in March 9, the opening day of free agency, and the Broncos would presumably like to have a decision from Manning by then.

The five-time MVP holds numerous records, including most career passing yards (71,940), and most career touchdown passes (539).

If Manning retires, the Broncos may be forced to retain unrestricted free agent quarterback Brock Osweiler.
