Sabres' Derek Grant: Frontrunner for roster spot
Grant has been impressing at camp and could make the season-opening roster, The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis:
Grant and general manager Tim Murray have known each other since both were members of the Ottawa Senators organization, and Grant was signed this past summer to a one-year deal. The 6-foot-3 center has been consistently excellent in the AHL over the past two seasons, and although the Sabres have a logjam at center with Ryan O'Reilly, Jack Eichel, Zemgus Girgensons and Johan Larsson in the mix, there is a lineup spot available and carrying extra centers never hurts. Should Grant make the team, it'll likely be as a fourth-liner. Though he scored 45 points in 36 games for AHL Stockton last year, his short-term fantasy upside in the NHL is limited.
