Report: Seguin, Stars close to contract extension

Jerome Miron / USA Today Sports

The Dallas Stars and center Tyler Seguin are closing in on a contract extension that could pay him more than $9.5 million per year, TSN's Darren Dreger reports.

Seguin and the team have been locked in a contract saga for weeks, with the 26-year-old expressing his disappointment in a lack of discussions in late August and the Stars subsequently expressing their desire to get a deal done.

Should the reported number be accurate, Seguin, who has one more season at $5.75 million, would own the highest cap hit on the team, surpassing captain Jamie Benn, who's set to earn $9.5 million annually until 2025.

Seguin's figure would also be among the highest in the NHL at his position, as only six pivots are currently under contract for more than $9 million per season.

Since arriving in Dallas in 2013, Seguin has been one of the league's premier producers, amassing 384 points in 387 games.
