Canadiens place Alzner on waivers for purpose of buyout
The Montreal Canadiens have placed veteran defenseman Karl Alzner on unconditional waivers for the purpose of buying out his contract, the team announced Tuesday.
Alzner, 32, has two years remaining on his deal, which carries an annual cap hit of $4.62 million.
The Canadiens currently have $10.87 million in projected cap space for 2020-21, per CapFriendly.
The 6-foot-2 blue-liner appeared in four games for Montreal this season. He has spent the majority of the last two campaigns with the AHL's Laval Rockets.
Alzner signed a five-year, $23.12-million pact with the Canadiens ahead of the 2017-18 season. He recorded 12 points in 82 games during that campaign and played just nine contests in 2018-19 before being sent down to the AHL.
The British Columbia native has amassed 20 goals and 130 points over 686 career games.
