Capitals promote Olaf Kolzig to head goaltending coach
The Washington Capitals have promoted Olaf Kolzig to head goaltending coach, from associate goaltending coach, the club announced on Wednesday.
Capitals general manager George McPhee said:
"Olie has a wealth of knowledge and experience and we believe with him spending the past two seasons as the associate goaltending coach he is ready to take the next step in his coaching career."
Kolzig, or "Olie the Goalie" as he was referred to during his playing days, played all but eight of his 719 games with the Capitals. He owns most of the team's career and single-season goaltending records.
Kolzig retired in 2009, finishing with a 2.71 goals against average and .906 save percentage. He won the Vezina Trophy in 2000.
Scott Murray takes over as the club's associate goaltending coach, Washington also announced. Murray spent the past five seasons as goaltending coach with the OHL's Sudbury Wolves.
