Sharks' Smith: The goal is to be 'huge contributor' in rookie season
San Jose Sharks blue-chip prospect Will Smith has his sights set on a big rookie season should he make the squad come October.
"I have expectations and goals as a player, and the goal is to make the team and be a huge contributor," Smith said, per NHL.com's Chelena Goldman.
Smith was the fourth overall pick in 2023 and signed his entry-level contract with the Sharks in May after one season at Boston College. He led the NCAA with 46 assists and 71 points.
The 19-year-old also produced nine points in seven games for the United States at the world juniors, helping his home country win a gold medal.
Smith and 2024 first overall pick Macklin Celebrini are expected to be heavily relied upon to lead the rebuilding Sharks back into contention over the next few years, but general manager Mike Grier anticipates a mix of youth and experience going forward.
"These older guys aren't going to be in any rush to give their spots away to a young guy," he said. "It should make for a pretty competitive camp. May the best man win."
San Jose has missed the playoffs in five straight seasons and finished 29th and 32nd in the league standings over the past two years.
