Filip Zadina signs 2-year deal in Switzerland
Unrestricted free-agent forward Filip Zadina signed a two-year deal with HC Davos of the Swiss National League, the club announced Monday.
Zadina spent this past season with the last-place San Jose Sharks, amassing 23 points and a career-high 13 goals in 72 outings.
He signed a one-year, $1.1-million deal with the Western Conference club last July. Zadina was set to become a restricted free agent upon its expiration, but the Sharks didn't tender him a qualifying offer, allowing him to hit the open market.
Zadina spent the first five seasons of his career in Detroit after the Red Wings selected him sixth overall at the 2018 NHL Draft. He was considered one of the top scorers in his class after he lit up the QMJHL with 44 goals and 82 points in 57 outings during the 2017-18 campaign as a member of the Halifax Mooseheads.
However, that success didn't translate to the NHL level. Zadina scored just 28 goals in 190 games as a Red Wing.
Detroit placed Zadina on waivers last summer, and both sides agreed to terminate the remaining two seasons of his three-year, $5.48-million contract. The Czech winger forewent $4.56 million in salary as a result.
A report out of Czechia last week suggested Zadina was going to sign a professional tryout contract with the Buffalo Sabres. But his agent Darren Ferris refuted that claim to the Buffalo News' Lance Lysowski.
Ferris added that he was in the process of completing a contract for Zadina with another team.
Zadina, 24, totaled 91 points in 262 NHL games.
