Karlsson to play in Penguins' opener after missing preseason
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson declared himself good to go for Wednesday's season opener despite missing training camp and preseason with an upper-body injury, according to The Athletic's Rob Rossi.
Karlsson got hurt during offseason training and had been listed as day-to-day. The 34-year-old was a full participant in Pittsburgh's practice Saturday and took power-play reps with the top unit.
The Penguins' first game of the season is scheduled for Oct. 9 against the New York Rangers.
Pittsburgh acquired Karlsson from the San Jose Sharks in the 2023 offseason after he won his third Norris Trophy on the strength of a 101-point campaign. He dropped off to 56 points last year with the Penguins as the club missed the playoffs for the second straight year.
Karlsson is entering his 16th season after breaking into the NHL with the Ottawa Senators in 2009-10.
