Report: Trouba avoids discipline for hit on Canadiens' Barron

New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba has avoided supplemental discipline for the hit that injured Montreal Canadiens blue-liner Justin Barron Tuesday night, reports The Athletic's Peter Baugh.

Trouba crushed Barron near the boards in the third period of the Blueshirts' 7-2 win. Canadiens rearguard Mike Matheson immediately fought Trouba in response.

The officials didn't penalize Trouba for the hit. He and Matheson got fighting majors over the ensuing bout, and the Habs defender also received a 10-minute misconduct.

Barron had to be helped off the ice and didn't return. Montreal announced he's considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury on Wednesday.

Trouba and Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher went at it after a whistle before the other incident.

Trouba has been suspended twice in his career for two games apiece - once for a hit to then-Ottawa Senators winger Mark Stone's head while with the Winnipeg Jets in February 2017, and again for elbowing Vegas Golden Knights forward Pavel Dorofeyev in January of this year.

The Rangers blue-liner has also been fined three times - for slashing in 2020, high-sticking in 2023, and elbowing Florida Panthers forward Evan Rodrigues during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final in May.
