Barzal out 4-6 weeks, placed on LTIR
New York Islanders forward Mat Barzal will miss four-to-six weeks with an upper-body injury, the club announced Saturday.
The Islanders moved Barzal to long-term injured reserve, while they gave defenseman Adam Pelech the same recovery timetable and placed him on regular IR.
Meanwhile, blue-liners Mike Reilly and Alexander Romanov are both day-to-day.
Barzal returned to Long Island to consult with team doctors Friday, missing a road win over the Buffalo Sabres. He hadn't missed a game this season before that, collecting two goals and three assists in 10 contests.
The 27-year-old led the Islanders with 80 points over 80 games in 2023-24. He collected 57 assists, which ranked second on the team by three behind Noah Dobson.
Pelech, Reilly, and Romanov all got hurt in Friday's victory. Pelech took a puck to the face in the second period, Reilly hit his head on the ice following a collision with Sabres forward Jordan Greenway, and Romanov subsequently exited but later returned.
The Islanders are already without forward Anthony Duclair, who was given a four-to-six-week timetable of his own on Oct. 24.
New York entered Saturday sitting sixth in the Metropolitan Division at 4-5-2.
