The San Jose Sharks honored a franchise icon Saturday night, sending Joe Thornton's No. 19 to the rafters with a moving ceremony before their tilt against the Buffalo Sabres.

Thornton is the Sharks' all-time leader in assists (804) and ranks second on the franchise leaderboard in points (1,055) and third in games played (1,104).

The Sharks acquired Thornton from the Boston Bruins during the 2005-06 campaign. He won the Hart Trophy and Art Ross that season after scoring 125 points, including 92 in 58 games after his move to San Jose.

The future Hall of Famer spent 15 years in the Bay Area before stops in Toronto and Florida to end his career.

Here are some of the most notable highlights from Jumbo's big night.

Thornton is the second Shark to have his number retired, joining longtime teammate and friend Patrick Marleau.

"To see Jumbo's banner next to mine up there, it just makes me happy," Marleau said.

"It truly was an honor to be your teammate, friend, and roommate," Thornton said to Marleau. "I'm absolutely humbled to have my number up there next to yours."

Thornton's speech highlighted his patented sense of humor, as he shouted out Macklin Celebrini for helping his kids with their homework. The Sharks drafted Celebrini first overall this year, and Thornton is housing the youngster for his rookie season.

Thornton's wife and kids helped send his banner to the top of the SAP Center.
