Shattenkirk retires after 14 NHL seasons
Veteran defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk formally announced his retirement from the NHL on Tuesday.
Shattenkirk played 14 major-league seasons but didn't land a contract this past summer after becoming an unrestricted free agent.
"After 14 amazing years in the National Hockey League, I have decided to retire," he said. "I never knew hockey would take me this far. This game has had a dramatic impact in developing me into the man I am today."
Shattenkirk was drafted 14th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2007. After a brief stint in Denver, he spent time with the St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Ducks, and Boston Bruins.
The 35-year-old amassed 484 points in 952 career games and won a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2020.
