Matthews misses 2nd straight game with upper-body injury
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews missed a second consecutive game Monday as the team lost 5-2 to the Winnipeg Jets.
The Maple Leafs are off until Dec. 27. Matthews' status for that game is still up in the air, head coach Craig Berube said Monday, per The Athletic's Joshua Kloke.
Matthews missed Saturday's loss to the New York Islanders because he re-aggravated an upper-body injury. The ailment caused the three-time "Rocket" Richard Trophy winner to miss nine games earlier this season.
The specifics of the injury haven't been made public. Matthews visited a doctor in November in Germany to receive treatment during his previous absence.
The Maple Leafs went 7-2-0 without Matthews while he was out the first time, but they've now dropped two straight.
Matthews has produced 11 goals and 12 assists in 24 games this season.
