Utah resurrects Outlaws as possible team name, drops Wasatch
One day after the Utah Hockey Club narrowed its list of potential new team names down to three, it removed one of those finalists in favor of a previous contender.
Outlaws is back on the list and Wasatch is out, the relocated squad announced Thursday.
"We listened to your feedback and dug into all the Qualtrics data from last night's survey," the club posted on X. "For the team name, it's clear that Outlaws should be in the mix instead of Wasatch, so we're swapping it out."
Fan voting began Wednesday night during the team's 3-2 home loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Hours earlier, Utah said it had trimmed the list down to Mammoth, Wasatch, and its current moniker, and that surveys would be conducted at its next four home games beginning with that evening's matchup. Voting will continue at the Delta Center on Friday, Sunday, and Tuesday.
The Outlaws name was one of six finalists in June along with Blizzard, Mammoth, Venom, Yeti, and Utah Hockey Club.
The Wasatch is a mountain range that runs south from the Utah-Idaho border to central Utah. Most of the state's population lives within a 15-mile radius of the mountains. Wasatch replaced Yeti in Wednesday's final three because the team couldn't reach a coexistence agreement with YETI, a Texas-based company specializing in drinkware.
Utah won't determine a new name during this season but is preparing to do so before the 2025-26 campaign.
