Canada defenseman Cale Makar was unable to suit up for Saturday's 3-1 loss against the United States because of illness.

Thomas Harley took his spot in the lineup. The Dallas Stars blue-liner was put on standby as an injury replacement after Shea Theodore was hurt in Canada's opener against Sweden and ruled out for the remainder of the event. Harley joined the team in Montreal after Makar was deemed questionable.

Makar is still eligible to participate in the tournament. Canada plays Finland on Monday to conclude its round-robin action.

Harley paired up with Drew Doughty for his debut, while Travis Sanheim occupied Makar's role alongside Devon Toews.

Makar was one of Canada's first six players named to the roster last summer, and he was named an assistant captain before the tournament. He logged more than 28 minutes Wednesday in the 4-3 overtime victory over Sweden.

The 26-year-old notched 63 points in 57 games with the Colorado Avalanche before the tournament began.
