Watch: Sorokin credited with goal after Predators scored on own net
New York Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin was credited with his first-ever goal Saturday, although he wasn't the one who took the shot.
Sorokin made a save on forward Jonathan Marchessault as the Nashville Predators were pushing with the goalie pulled in the final stages of the contest. The rebound squirted out to veteran Steven Stamkos, who tried to send the puck to defenseman Brady Skjei at the blue line.
However, the pass was out of reach and the puck went down the length of the ice and into Nashville's empty net, capping off the Islanders' 7-4 victory.
This is the second goalie goal in Islanders history after Billy Smith found the back of the net against the Colorado Rockies on Nov. 28, 1979. Sorokin is the 17th goalie to score, and his tally was the 20th in league history.
"If I shot this goal, it's a different emotion," Sorokin said, per Isles on MSGSN. "This is just luck. It was a good save before the (goal)."
Sorokin is mostly just pleased that he scored before a particular New York Rangers superstar and fellow Russian.
"I knew I'd do it before Igor (Shesterkin)," he said, according to the New York Post's Ethan Sears.
The 29-year-old is the third netminder to score this season. Minnesota Wild goalie Filip Gustavsson lit the lamp Oct. 15, and Pittsburgh Penguins puck-stopper Alex Nedeljkovic bagged one Jan. 17.
Sorokin made 24 saves in the victory over Nashville.
