PHOTO: Coyotes G Mike Smith's new family oriented mask

Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith has used a Wiley E. Coyote mask design since he initially arrived in Phoenix following the 2010-11 season. This season, however, Smith has added some new components to his mask - namely the likenesses of his sons Ajax and Aksel.

Check out the images posted by artist David Arrigo:

Arrigo explained the concept of the mask in a post on his website:

It features his sons Ajax and Aksel who are using the Wile E. Coyote’s ears to navigate.  Wile E has been a fixture on Smitty’s mask since he arrived in Phoenix, however with this instalment he did everything but paint the mask.  I took Smitty’s ideas and applied a design where the entire mask is used as a canvas for a seamless image.

In addition to Smith's sons being featured on the mask, and having their names spelled out in The Road Runner's dust, Arrigo invited the Smith boys to personally design and paint the backplate.

"He was stoked," Smith told Fox Sports' Craig Morgan of the fun moment when he told one of his sons they'd get to paint a portion of his mask. "He was like, 'Oh yeah, I paint daddy's helmet!'"
