The Edmonton Oilers are set to interview Craig Berube for their head coach position, TSN's Ryan Rishaug reports.

The Toronto Maple Leafs fired Berube earlier in May after missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign. The Oilers, meanwhile, dismissed Kris Knoblauch on Thursday in the wake of their first-round playoff elimination.

Knoblauch led Edmonton to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances before this year's early exit.

The Oilers were reportedly targeting former Vegas Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy, but the organization has withheld permission for Edmonton to interview him, Rishaug adds.

Edmonton finished second in the Pacific Division this season with 93 points, a nine-point decline from last year. After the Oilers were eliminated from the playoffs, captain Connor McDavid said his club was "average all year." McDavid also made headlines in March by publicly praising the Tampa Bay Lightning's coaching following a regular-season loss to Jon Cooper's club.

Berube amassed an 84-62-18 record across two seasons with the Maple Leafs. He led the St. Louis Blues to a Stanley Cup in 2019 before being fired during the 2023-24 season.
