Report: Canucks D Alex Edler to make Swedish Olympic team despite suspension, injury
According to Aftonbladet reporter Hans Abrahamsson, Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alex Edler will be named to the Swedish Olympic men's ice hockey team on Tuesday.
Edler's inclusion on the Swedish roster would be something of a surprise. The Canucks defender has produced at an uncharacteristically poor rate this season, and additionally hasn't played a game for the Canucks since December 3rd, when he sustained an undisclosed injury in a game against the Nashville Predators.
Moreover, due to a holdover suspension assessed to Edler by the IIHF for an injurious knee-on-knee hit he threw against Team Canada forward Eric Staal during the World Championships, the defenseman will be ineligible to compete in Sweden's first two games of the Olympic tournament.
Edler has 14 games of international experience with Team Sweden, including appearances at the World Championships in 2008 and 2013.
