Minnesota Wild forward Mikko Koivu fractured his ankle while blocking a shot and underwent successful surgery Monday. General manager Chuck Fletcher mentioned Monday that Koivu's recovery time was accelerated by a month by having the surgery.
With just over a month to go before the Olympic games in Sochi, Fletcher will let Koivu decide if he will play for Finland if his ankle is healed. The four-week timeline would mean Koivu could not suffer any setbacks if he wants to participate in Sochi.
Koivu would have to play February 6th against the Nashville Predators in order to go to the Olympics.
