Report: Westgarth told to 'make something happen' prior to Flames, Canucks brawl
Details are beginning to emerge about the events leading up to Saturday's line brawl between the Vancouver Canucks and the Calgary Flames. As John Tortorella awaits a decision from the NHL in terms of a potential fine or suspension for his role, a report from The Province suggests Kevin Westgarth was acting on direct orders when he challenged rookie Kellen Lain to a fight.
From Tony Gallagher:
A person in position to know of such things, but who must remain nameless, has said that Kevin Bieksa, who apparently knows Calgary’s Kevin Westgarth, was told during their extended discussion at centre ice before the brawl started that the Flames tough guy admitted they’d been sent out to make something happen.
This adds a whole new layer to the story, possibly putting the Calgary coaching staff back in the firing line in terms of placing blame.
