New Jersey Devils rookie defenseman Jon Merrill scored his first NHL goal on Friday night. Sometimes a player's first NHL goal comes late in a blowout, or is deflected into the net off of a skate.

Merrill doesn't have the offensive upside of fellow Devils rookie Eric Gelinas (who was recently re-assigned to Albany of the American Hockey League), but he's solid without the puck and has clearly earned the trust of Devils coaches. The 22-year-old rookie has played more than 19 minutes in five of the past six games.
