The top four Gary Suter crimes against humanity

Gary Suter enjoyed 17 seasons as one of the NHL's most productive defensemen. He won the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookies in 1985-86 and won a Stanley Cup in 1989 with the Calgary Flames. Suter also had a knack for dishing out some of the game's more notable acts of violence. Here's a look at four of Suter's most despicable incidents.

4. Suter staples Scott Young in the 1995-96 playoffs

The Colorado Avalanche would eventually win the franchise's first Stanley Cup in the spring of 1996, but Suter made his presence known by sending Scott Young face first into a partition during the Conference Semifinals. 

3. An infamous cheap shot on Gretzky at the 1991 Canada Cup

Suter knocked the Great One out of the remainder of the 1991 Canada Cup with this check from behind. Gretzky would later say "I've played against Gary for seven or eight years and I know he's a clean player... I don't think in any way he tried to hurt me." Uh, whatever you say, Wayne. 

2. Suter responds to spear in the neck with a slash to the face

Andrei Lomakin of the then Soviet Union team took a spear to a slash fight during the 1987 Canada Cup and paid for it. Suter would receive a six game suspension for slashing Lomakin in the face. The Russian forward required 20 stitches to patch up the wound, and Suter's ban stretched across international play and into the 1987-88 NHL season. 

1. A cheap shot on Paul Kariya

Suter was uncomfortable with Dale Hunter's status as one of history's greatest monsters, so he took it upon himself to decapitate Paul Kariya after the Anaheim winger scored a goal versus the Blackhawks in 1998. Suter was handed a four game suspension for his stick work which effectively ruled Kariya out of the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano.
