This Day in Hockey History

1920 - Canadiens hang 16 goals on Quebec Bulldogs

On March 3rd, 1920 the Montreal Canadiens scored 16 times overmatched Quebec Bulldogs goaltender Frank Brophy in a single game. Les boys thoroughly thrashed the Bulldogs that night by a final score of 16-3.

Four Canadiens skaters managed a hat-trick in the contest (Didier Pitre, Newsy Lalonde, Odie Cleghorn, Harry Cameron) while a fifth (Amos Arbour) also managed a multi-goal game.

Here's a very busy newspaper boxscore from the historical "high-event" game:

1968 - Beliveau's 1000th point

On March 3rd, 1968 Gordie Howe and the Detroit Red Wings hosted Jean Beliveau and the Montreal Canadiens. It was Beliveau's 911th career NHL game and he was sitting at 999 career points in the National Hockey League.

Early in the first period Beliveau beat Red Wings goaltender Roger Crozier, for his 1000th career NHL point. At the time, Beliveau joined Howe as only the second player in NHL history to reach the 1000 point plateau.

Despite Beliveau's milestone tally, the Detroit Red Wings managed to win the game 5-2.

1992 - Islander retire Mike Bossy's #22

On March 3rd, 1992 the New York Islanders sent super sniper Mike Bossy's No. 22 sweater to the rafters before a game against the Montreal Canadiens.

During the ceremony - which lasted about 30 minutes - Bossy was introduced by teammate Bryan Trottier, and addressed the fans in both English and French. "I would like to give you a hand. Thank you," Bossy said to the fans in Uniondale while stepping back from the microphone and clapping.

It was rookie defenseman Scott Lachance's NHL debut and it left an indelible mark on the young defender - who would go on to have a long, successful NHL career. "A chill went through me," Lachance told Joe LaPointe after the game. "It was an honor being on the ice with someone like that."

Ultimately the Islanders fell 4-3 to Patrick Roy and the Montreal Canadiens.
