Sharks overwhelm Kings in Game 2 to extend series lead

The San Jose Sharks scored seven straight goals in the final two periods to rout the Los Angeles Kings 7-2 in Game 2 on Sunday, carrying a 2-0 series lead as the series shifts to Los Angeles.

Joe Pavelski led all scorers with a goal and two assists, while Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau each added a goal and an assist for the Sharks, who trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes but took control with three goals 10:20 apart in the second period from unlikely scorers Mike Brown, Raffi Torres and Justin Braun. 

Marleau, Pavelski, Couture and Joe Thornton scored in a 8:58 span in the third to put the contest out of reach. Antti Niemi made 22 saves in a contest controlled by San Jose after a bit of a sluggish start.

Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick, who allowed five goals in Game 1, was beaten seven times on 40 shots. Jake Muzzin and Trevor Lewis scored the first-period goals for Los Angeles, which drew one penalty while giving the Sharks six power-plays.

Game 3 is at Staples Center on Tuesday. In the meantime, the Kings are probably hoping to rediscover the defense and goaltending that won them this season's Jennings Trophy.
